SCHOOL. That state is the most serious, and the most suitable for making the city free


The great men of Italian liberalism, even before Cavour, always gave great importance to public education. They were well aware that in a country of ancient and willed ignorance, precisely because of obscurantist domination of the Church and the various foreign rulers, and the school, the only school to train really free citizens, and that liberalism does not penetrate the culture without the consciences and minds of the people. Therefore, they were liberal center-right and center-left, moderate or liberal (I think of Lorenzo Valerio and others), more general education and the school were given priority in all the liberal programs. And the school was from the beginning of the Risorgimento, pubblica, come dovere sociale imposto allo Stato, proprio perché in Italia la scuola “privata” era quella reazionaria tenuta della Chiesa, in particolare dai Gesuiti, ma anche da altri ordini religiosi. Basti ricordare il generoso attivismo del più grande sindaco che abbia avuto Roma, Ernesto Nathan, insieme liberale e mazziniano, nell’istituire le “scuole rurali”, ovviamente pubbliche, nell’Agro Romano.
Siamo convinti, inoltre, della maggiore efficienza e giustizia liberale di una scuola pubblica rispetto ad una privata, in quanto realizza quella “eguaglianza nei punti di partenza” che il grande liberale ed economista Luigi Einaudi raccomandava.
