La mostra intende fornire un contributo alla storia del collezionismo secentesco attraverso la ricostruzione degli interessi artistici del Pallotta, elevato alla porpora cardinalizia da Urbano VIII nel 1635. Legato alla raffinata cerchia culturale animata dalla famiglia Barberini, nelle sue residenze il prelato raccolse i capolavori dei più grandi artisti del tempo, orgoglioso di poterli esibire agli illustri personaggi che ospitò a Caldarola. A seguito di una attenta e paziente ricerca condotta in diversi archivi pubblici e privati, è stato possibile ricostruire la consistenza della quadreria del cardinale, dispersa poco tempo dopo la sua scomparsa per sanare la sua grave situazione debitoria. Legato a Ferrara, il Pallotta ricorse al pennello dei più qualificati pittori emiliani del Seicento ed in particolare amò le opere di Guercino e di Guido Reni, ma anche quelle dei comprimari della prestigiosa scuola felsinea, rappresentata dai dipinti di soggetto sacro e mitologico alla Annibale Carracci, come Cantarini, Elisabetta Sirani, Tiarini. Con l’occasione della mostra è stato possibile restaurare la grande tela del Guercino raffigurante la Cacciata dei mercanti dal tempio oggi a Palazzo Rosso, nella quale il pittore, in omaggio al committente, pone al centro della scena lo scudiscio con cui Cristo si avventa sui profanatori, emblema araldico della casata del committente. Nella collezione del cardinale non mancavano nemmeno dipinti di soggetto letterario ispirati alla Gerusalemme Liberata, i cui protagonisti compaiono in varie tele commissionate dal prelato: è il caso della Liberazione di Olindo e Sofronia dipinta da Mattia Preti, opera nella quale il sensuale nudo femminile esplicita l’apprezzamento per temi che, senza forzature iconografiche, consentissero di soddisfare l’edonismo del committente e potessero, come giustamente Sgarbi intitola l’introduzione del catalogo, procurargli prolungate estasi visive.

Un’altra opera di Caravaggio, il San Francesco in meditazione, oggi nel museo civico di Cremona, esprime viceversa una serena contemplazione del Crocifisso, a rappresentare un profonda tensione, in contrast with the similar subject of Ludovico Carracci special place in comparison.
